Cookies and storage on your device
Last updated: 30 October 2026
Gingerwall sets no cookies, and runs no advertising, tracking or analytics. It does keep some things in your browser's own storage (called "local storage" and "session storage"), because the app needs them to work. The law allows storage that is strictly necessary for a service you asked for without asking your consent first. This page lists all of it, so you know what is there.
We load no fonts, scripts or images from other companies' servers. Maps and area photos come from our own server.
What we keep, and why
| What | Why it is needed | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Your sign-in tokens, from Amazon Cognito | Keeps you signed in | Until you sign out; the longest-lived token lasts 30 days |
| Your current chat and its results | Shows your conversation again if you reload the page or come back to it | Until you start a new chat or sign out; treated as finished after 6 hours |
| A message or report still being written | Lets the answer arrive if you close the app or your screen turns off | Until it arrives, or you start a new chat or sign out |
| The key for each chat in progress | Locks the chat's working copy on our server between your messages | 400 days, then removed |
| Your chat lock key, and which passkeys are on this device | Opens your kept chats on this device | Until you choose "Lock chats on this phone" in Settings |
| Which chats you have read | Shows what is new | Until you remove the chat |
| Your plan, and whether you are in the beta | Shows the right screens straight away | Until it changes |
| Small notes the app makes for itself, for example that you have seen the introduction or a tip | So it doesn't show the same thing again | Until you clear your browser's storage |
| Your colour theme (light or dark) | Shows the app the way you set it | Until you change it |
| A voucher, invite, share or payment link you just opened (session storage) | Finishes what the link started after you sign in | Until it is used, or you close the tab |
Sites you go to from Gingerwall
When you pay, you go to Stripe's checkout page, which sets its own cookies to take the payment and prevent fraud. When you follow a link to an advert or a map, the other site sets its own cookies. Their own policies apply.
Removing it
Signing out removes your current chat and sign-in. To remove everything, including your chat lock key on this device, use "Lock chats on this phone" in Settings, then clear this site's data in your browser's settings. You can open your kept chats again on this device with your passkey, another device or your recovery code.
Changes
If we ever want to store something that is not strictly necessary, such as analytics, we will ask you first and update this page.
